“Calculate how many grams of calcium carbonate should be added to 150 grams of 20% (by mass) hydrochloric acid to make the concentration of the acid half as strong (or twice as weak).”
These students are on a track in which they have taken chemistry 4 periods a week for four years. They are on a science/math pathway. The other option here is a humanities pathway in which they still take 4 periods of chemistry a week, but for two years. I think you will find the photos interesting. Let me know what you think and give that problem a try…I am sure you can solve it!
Our next stop was an art class with primary students. They were learning about Fabergé eggs and then we painted eggs.
In the afternoon, we toured Michurinsk State Agrarian University. Michurinsk is known as an important agricultural region of Russia. We met a soil scientist who showed us soil profiles from the region. There is a very thick layer of the blackest topsoil I have ever seen which makes this an excellent place for growing fruits and vegetables. They are famous for the apples, in particular. From there we went to “Green Valley”, a huge agribusiness. The main crop there is potatoes. They have contracts with Frito-Lay and supply a lot of the French fries for European McDonalds.
